Mark, David, Andrew, and Barry Yaksich all practise a style of Osteopathy, which has been passed down generation to generation. The philosophy is still the same, but the gathering of knowledge and skills have been different to that of the mainstream Osteopathy.
Our form of treatment originated in Europe where this family had its roots in the Islands of Split in Yugoslavia. This manipulative component formed part of the folk medicine that my family practised for generations and which was introduced to West Australia by Kris Martinovich and his sister (our grandmother) in the early part of this century.
My father grew up in Boulder West Australia learning his skills from his mother and her younger brother, Kris Martinovich. Kris Martinovich also trained his four sons, two of whom still practise successfully as Chiropractors in Fremantle today.
My father's full first time practice was in Geraldton, in 1954. At the time, the Medical Act deemed it illegal to extract a fee for services. All income was received via donations.
The practice grew rapidly. He realised for the business to expand he would need to move to the capital, Perth, which he did in 1962.
After establishing himself in Perth, he built a clinic in Bayswater. The clinic included a steam room, plunge pool, sauna and scrub tables - all a rarity back in the early 60's. It proved to be very popular with the jockeys on Saturday mornings before the races.
Chiropractors in this state gained registration in 1964. My father, along with his cousins, gained registration under the Grandfather clause. From this point on, my father used the term "Chiropractor - Osteopath". He was never one hundred percent happy with the American flavour, which was being added to the Chiropractic profession and maintained his distinction, with his title and philosophies to his healing art.
In the ensuing years, my father undertook the training and transferrance of knowledge to his four sons, Barry, Mark, Andrew and David.
The practice gradually expanded, employing a close friend, Dr E Grigg, a reknowned Perth physician, to help in our clinical skills.
The Yaksich Osteopathic Clinics have gradually expanded to their current stature, well known throughout Perth and still practising with the philosophies held by Chris Yaksich and Kris Martinovich before him.
